What is Books for BC Babies?

reading17Books for BC Babies is an early literacy and parenting resource that influences the experiences that BC’s newborns have in the environment in which they grow, live and learn. It is the only provincial outreach program in BC that delivers early learning resources directly to families of newborns, and then connects the parents to additional resources in the community in which they live.

Books for BC Babies is led by a steering committee made up of early literacy, public library and public health professionals.

The resource is delivered in partnership with community agencies that share the goal of early childhood development. In the majority of communities, public health nurses and health centres deliver the resource to the parents of newborns.

Public health nurses bring the Books for BC Babies resource into the homes of parents with newborns and introduce it as a gift from the library.

They take time to talk about the importance of reading and singing to newborns for optimal childhood development and invite them to visit the library with their newborn.
